West Coast 6 days Road Cycling Tour

6 Days/5 Nights (814 km)

This is 6 days of the riding around Tasmania's wicked and hilly west coast. Not for the faint-hearted this tour is not only challenging, it's also extremely scenic with rolling hills that never let you lose your focus. If you don't have the time for the entire 10 days, but want a real workout, then this may be the solution for you. This tour starts in Launceston and finishes in Hobart. Overnight stays include Sheffield, Tullah, Strahan, Bronte Park and Hobart.

Next Departure Date:
11 - 16 February 2009

Itinerary:

Day 1
Wednesday
11 February 2009
Day 1 route map

Launceston/Sheffield (136km)
Today is the start of the 6 day West Coast tour, and there may be some new faces starting in the pack. It's an easy start to the day, head out of town to the historic towns of Evandale and Westbury, then stop for a break in lovely Deloraine. The mountains loam ominously all morning and this afternoon, you have no choice but to get amongst them. The Gog Range is legendary in cycling circles and it's waiting for you today, followed shortly by The Gogette! It's only a short day, but end with an uphill at Sheffield, town of murals.

Day 2
Thursday
12 February 2009
Day 2 route map

Sheffield/Tullah(124km)
More time in the mountains today as you head down then up the Cethana Pass towards Cradle Mountain in its World Heritage Listed National Park. No time to linger, continue on and up to Black Bluff for the King of the Mountain stage then race down the other side and its rolling hills into the Hydro town of Tullah overlooking stunning Lake Rosebery.

Day 3
Friday
13 February 2009
Day 3 route map

Tullah/Strahan (145km)
Lumpier than your mother porridge, the stage to Zeehan for lunch will test those unprepared legs. The road to Rees Dam is usually deserted, and the views spectacular but there's not a straight section on it. After lunch it's a relatively straighforward roll to the remote fishing village of Strahan.

Day 4
Saturday
14 February 2009
Day 4 route map

Strahan/Bronte Park (158km)
Head out the only other road out of town which takes you to the old mining town of Queenstown. Another King of the Mountain stage to the top of 99 bends out of Queenstown then it's a long downhill and completely flat around man-made Lake Burbury. Eat well for lunch, there's mountains ahead and Victoria Pass is not to be mocked. Once you're there though, it's along the plateau we go, exposed but flat, this highway takes you all the way to your accommodation tonight.

Day 5
Sunday
15 February 2009
Day 5 route map

Bronte Park/Hobart (155km)
An early spot of fishing this morning? Or perhaps sleep to gain as much energy as you can. Today is one of the longest days, especially for tired legs, but keep your chin, the majority of it is downhill. That's not to say, there aren't any uphills, come on, it's Tassie, of course there's uphills! Make your way into Hobart tonight - civilisation at last!

Day 6
Monday
16 February 2009
Day 6 route map

Hobart/Hobart (96km)
Explore the southern parts of Tasmania this morning on this, your last day in the saddle. Opt for the short version and head straight for the main destination of today - Mt Wellington. Standing at 1270m (nearly 4000ft) this ride takes you from sea level all the way to the top and back at around 8%. It's the satisfaction of reaching the peak that keeps you going. Three cheers all round, now head back to Hobart to celebrate over a well-deserved cold one.
